What is Reiki?
A Powerful, Holistic Healing Practice
Reiki is a traditional Japanese energy-healing practice that works with the concept of universal life force energy to encourage healing, balance and harmony on an emotional, energetic and spiritual level.
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words: Rei, often interpreted as universal or spiritual wisdom, and Ki, meaning life force energy. Within Reiki traditions, this energy is understood to flow through all living things, connecting us to ourselves, one another and the wider universe.
Reiki practitioners work with this universal healing energy, using gentle hand placements on or just above the body, with the intention of supporting the body's natural balance and encouraging emotional and spiritual healing.
At its heart, Reiki is a holistic practice that recognises the connection between mind, body and spirit, offering an opportunity for healing, self-discovery and a deeper connection with our inner selves.
A Brief History of Reiki
Reiki originated in Japan in the early twentieth century through the teachings of Mikao Usui, whose spiritual journey and exploration of healing became the foundation of the Reiki system practised today.
According to traditional Reiki accounts, Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening while undertaking a period of meditation on Mount Kurama, near Kyoto. This experience is said to have deepened his understanding of universal life force energy and inspired the development of his healing practice.
Usui subsequently began sharing his teachings with others, combining spiritual principles, personal development and energy healing into a practice intended to support greater harmony and wellbeing.
His teachings were carried forward by practitioners including Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata, who played important roles in the development and introduction of Reiki beyond Japan, particularly in the Western world.
Today, Reiki is practised internationally through various traditions and lineages, united by a shared appreciation for healing energy, compassion and the interconnectedness of all living things.
How Reiki Works
Reiki is founded on the belief that universal life force energy flows through and around all living beings. Within this spiritual understanding, our energetic wellbeing is closely connected to our emotional, mental and spiritual experiences.
Traditional Reiki teachings suggest that life's challenges, emotional difficulties and periods of stress can influence our energetic balance. When we feel disconnected, overwhelmed or emotionally burdened, this may be understood within Reiki as a disruption to the natural harmony of our energy.
Reiki practitioners channel universal healing energy through their hands, directing it with the intention of supporting energetic balance, releasing stagnant energy and encouraging healing where it is needed.
Some Reiki traditions describe this process through the body's subtle energy systems, including the chakras, meridians and aura. These concepts provide a spiritual framework for understanding how energy is believed to move through and around us.
Within this framework, Reiki is understood to encourage the release of energetic imbalances, helping to restore a sense of harmony, connection and flow.
The experience of Reiki is deeply personal. Some people describe feeling warmth, emotional release, peace or a renewed sense of connection with themselves, while others experience the practice in different ways.
Reiki offers a compassionate and holistic approach to energy healing, honouring the connection between our emotional, energetic and spiritual wellbeing.
